USCIS Event Sheds Light on Immigration Scams

At the end of last year, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency sponsored an event in Newark to address some of the nation's major immigration issues. The event brought together advocates from all over the United States to discuss the problematic issue of scamming that is sometimes enacted against immigrants in the country. Slated to attend the event were representatives from the Catholic Charities of the Diocese, the Federal Trade Commission, and the American Immigration Lawyers, among others.

Issues concerning immigration scams were the main focus of the Newark event, particularly internet fraud. Groups in attendance discussed common types of fraud that need to be protected against and what kinds of steps immigrants can take to avoid being defrauded in the future. One topic on the event's agenda was the recent complaints that have surfaced regarding the significant number of companies in New Jersey alone that were cited as illegally advertising themselves under the false pretense that they could prepare U.S. immigration forms for immigrants seeking legal assistance.

The event was part of a larger plan to protect immigrants in the United States known as The Unauthorized Practice of Immigration Law Initiative. This too was launched by the USCIS, along with several other federal agencies, and it is actively working to protect the status of immigrants in the country. Clearly, the USCIS has recognized some of the same inherent problems with immigration law that we at Maney | Gordon have.
